OMG! DYK WOT UR TEEN IS TXTING?

Friday, May 29th, 2009

Four out of five teens today carry a mobile device – using it to instantly connect with friends and family, play games and get online. New trends show that texting is on its way to becoming more popular and important to teens than voice-to-voice calling. In fact, 42% of teens report that they could text with their eyes closed!

Keeping up with your teen can be exhausting, especially when they appear to be conversing in another language – which is where DTXTR comes in.

Visit www.lgdtxtr.com decifer your teen’s texting language.

Haiti - Day 4

Sunday, March 15th, 2009

This morning we are leaving our friends in Haiti and heading back to U.S. soil.
It has been an eye opening experience.
I wish you could have met the children that touched my heart.
I saw Mothers and Grandmothers with saddness in their eyes, aching for their kids and grandkids.   And I saw children with hope in their eyes.  That hope is Haiti’s future.

I don’t feel guilty for what I have.  I feel blessed.  As should you.

Wednesday will be a BIG day.  We want to save children and you can help…44 cents at a time.

Haiti: Day 2

Friday, March 13th, 2009

March 13, 09

There is so much that World Concern is doing to help the Haitians help themselves.
Yesterday afternoon we went to an Aides/HIV clinic.  It was actually less of a clinic and more of a school.  The “students”
come to the school once a month.  There are a number of student groups; three come each day.   There are educated on thier disease: how they got it, how to prevent it in their own children.  They are trying to be taught work ethic and doing for themselves.  As you listen to the Haitians’ stories you find that some HAD jobs but when thier employer found out they had HIV, they were let go.
In a back “classroom” the ladies from the clinic were being taught to be seamstresses.  We saw them making patterns, learning to measure and actually making skirts.  The skirts are made out of paper first, for practice.
When enough of these girls are taught and trained at thier craft, World  Concern if going to try to help them get contracts to make uniforms for the school children.    The ladies make the uniforms, get the money and gain confidence.  This Haiti program is so different from others.  They don’t give handouts, they teach a life skill.
After the students complete the afternoon of education, they are given lunch and a dry goods back to take back to their family.  Over 4000 “students” a year are involved in this program.
Yesterday was a very positive day.  I was able to see, first hand, the good that World Concern is doing.
Today, we hand out the parasite medication.  Sanitation is not good in Haiti.  The rivers that the Haitians drink from are the same rivers that are used for washing clothing and for sanitation.  Yes, the Haitians can buy clean water but most can not afford it.  When you live in these conditions, parasites are more common than not.  The parasite medication costs 44 cents.  If World Concern were not established in Haiti, and handing out these meds, the children if Haiti would be very sick and may die.  This medication saves lives and today I am going to help save a life.
We take so much of what we have for granted.
Go turn on your kitchen faucet, fill up a glass of clean water, and think about that.   I did.

Haiti: Day 1

Thursday, March 12th, 2009

Thursday March 12, 2009

Where do I start.
My journey started Wednesday afternoon.  I hopped on a plane from Phoenix, Arizona with my final destination: Port Au Prince, Haiti.  It certainly was an eye opener to see the reaction of the ticket agent checking me in for the flight.  She actually made a snide comment about why would I be going to Haiti.  I answered very simply.
I am going to save the lives of children.
Derek from World Concern, Terese from and I met up at the Fort Lauderdale, Florida airport and all spent the night at a hotel near the airport.  The three of us caught an early morning flight to Port Au Prince this  morning.
Passengers arriving in Port Au Prince were met by a four piece band.  We were lucky to meet Christon, a 20 year veteran of World Concern.
Our education started immediately.

It’s Raining, It’s Pouring…

Tom and I both washed our cars over  the weekend!!!
We decided to take a survey;  Does washing your car REALLY make it rain?

So far, after a survey of TWO: YES!
What do YOU think?
